Are You Ready for Your Next European Adventure?
Set yourself up for a seamless European journey with essential tips and expert advice
to ensure your trip is as smooth and enjoyable as possible.
Planning your trip to Europe can be both thrilling and a bit daunting. Whether you’re crossing the pond for the first time or you’re a seasoned traveler, there are always a few burning questions that come to mind. In this guide, we’ll cover the top 5 FAQs my clients often ask about the best ways to travel to Europe, so you can focus on enjoying your trip without sweating the small stuff. Here are 5 Easy Ways to Simplify Your Next Trip to Europe:
1. Cash is King—Sometimes
Let’s face it—you don’t want to be caught in a charming little café without cash, or needing to use the restroom only to discover it costs a Euro. While Europe is generally card-friendly, it’s smart to have some euros (or the local currency) on hand.
My Tip:
Skip the sketchy currency exchange counters at the airport and head straight to an ATM. You can typically find them in the baggage retrieval areas, so while you wait for your suitcase, grab some cash. Airport ATMs often give you better rates, and who doesn’t love watching those bills roll out like it’s your personal money fountain?
2. Stay Ahead of Flight Delays and Gate Changes
Your Pro Move:
Download your airline’s app or a flight-tracking app like TripIt or FlightAware. Make sure to turn on notifications so you’ll be the first to know about any changes. And if you booked your trip through me (of course you did!), you’ll have a customized version of the TripPlans app that tracks all your flights and keeps you in the loop with real-time updates.
Flight delays and gate changes can throw a wrench in your travel plans. Staying informed is crucial to a smooth trip.
3. Combat Jet Lag Like a Pro
Jet lag can be a buzzkill, but with the right strategy, you can hit the ground running and enjoy your European adventure from day one.
Jet Lag Jujitsu:
- Start Shifting Early: Adjust your bedtime closer to your destination’s time zone a few days before your flight.
- Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate: Drink plenty of water to keep your body feeling good.
- Sunshine Therapy: Once you land, get outside! Natural light is the key to resetting your internal clock.
- Melatonin Magic: Pack some melatonin to help you sleep when you need to. Sweet dreams!
- Ginger Ale to the Rescue: Ginger ale is a great non-caffeinated option to help rehydrate and calm your stomach. The sharpness of ginger can also help ease the transition to your new time zone.
4. Avoid Overpaying for Taxis
Nobody likes a surprise at the end of a taxi ride—unless it’s a good one, like discovering your driver is also a tour guide. But how can you avoid overpaying?
Taxi Tactics:
- Go App: Stick with ride-share apps like Uber for transparent pricing. No funny business here!
- Ask Around: Your hotel can give you an idea of what a typical fare should be and even arrange a trustworthy driver for you.
- Flat Rate: For longer rides, like to the airport, ask for a flat rate before you get in. No surprises, just smooth sailing.
“The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page.”

5. Get Tipping Right in Europe
Tipping in Europe is different from tipping in the States. You don’t want to overdo it, but you also don’t want to skip it entirely.
Tip Talk:
- Restaurants: Service is often included, but leaving a little extra (like rounding up or adding 5-10%) for great service is appreciated.
- Taxis: Just round up the fare, and you’re good to go.
- Hotels: A euro or two per bag for the bellhop and a small tip for housekeeping will ensure you’re in their good graces.
When in doubt, go low-key. In many parts of Europe, tipping is more of a “nice to do” than a “must do.”
